The Transpersonal model encourages us to believe that we are born into this world a whole and connected being. Throughout the inevitable pain, struggle, wounds, and trauma of life, we become fragmented in our wholeness and naturally seek to repair and develop ourselves as we become motivated. The Transpersonal therapist might view the human striving for wholeness to include a strong connection with our spiritual self, and believe that the therapeutic relationship can create a container for powerful development and healing of our wholeness through access to our spiritual selves. In this context, “spiritual” can mean anything within ourselves that is connected to a divine sense of purpose and meaning. This can take a religious form for some and simply be kinesthetic awareness and inspiration for others. It is what is authentic to each of us that must be honored in this way in order to be connected with what exists outside of us.

Therefore, Transpersonal psychotherapists often work with a variety of therapeutic modalities as it is healing impasse and potential of the client that dictates what is effective, not necessarily the preferred modality of the practitioner.
