Feldenkrais

The Feldenkrais Method is a revolutionary approach to understanding human functioning and improving both physical and mental performance. It uses movement and attention to enhance your natural ability to discover, learn, change and continue to develop throughout your life. Because movement is a part of everything you do, this method can help you to expand your creativity, improve your physical abilities, recover from injury and trauma, understand yourself better, reduce pain and enjoy life more.

Dr. Moshe Feldenkrais (1904-1984) was a physicist, engineer, philosopher, and martial arts expert. Starting with rehabilitating his own knee injuries, he developed his method for 40 years, based on body mechanics, re-education of the nervous system, developmental movement, and learning theory.

This method can be taught in a class or private session. Each group lesson is a unique, structured movement exploration, with verbal directions from the instructor. These classes are appropriate for anyone: you are encouraged to do the movements in a comfortable, easy way. By doing unfamiliar movements and paying attention to the quality of how you move, your nervous system makes new connections and you develop more options in everything you do. There are over a thousand lessons that today are taught by practitioners all over the world.

In a private session, you might lie or sit on a low table. The practitioner uses gentle, non-invasive touch to help you move. Lessons are tailored to fit the needs of the person. Wear comfortable clothing for these sessions. The practitioner works with you to find what works for you, without forcing you to move into supposedly correct positions. Sometimes you will be surprised by the big differences you notice in your sensations or your posture after the tiny, gentle movements that seemed to be doing nothing. Functional Integration is often deeply relaxing, opening your whole system to learning new things and exploring possibilities.
