Acupuncture

Medical thought in the west considers the physiologic interplay of fluids and energies within the human body, the coursing of blood and lymph, firing of muscular contractions, hormonal secretion and neurological impulse conduction. Add to these substances the concept of an unseen charge, a fine, etheric current of essential vitality, that flows in concert with the other body fluids and impulses to help maintain perpetual velocity and balance. This etheric momentum is known in Chinese medical thought as “qi” (pronounced “chee”).

In perfect dynamic harmony, the qi, blood and body fluids in our bodies should flow without impediment and at the correct rate and consistency. Stresses we encounter in daily life tend to disturb the momentum, which in time leads to pain and dysfunction. We call this disturbance “qi and blood stagnation”. The goal of acupuncture is to restore the normal flow, moving us towards balance and improved health.

Since earliest times, Chinese medical philosophy has viewed human beings in a wholistic sense, affirming that we dwell simultaneously in physical, mental, emotional and spiritual realms. When we talk about balance or dysfunction, flow or stagnation of qi, we think inclusively of all of these realms of experience, as any or all may be impacted. Acupuncture and Chinese medicine can be meaningful therapies for each and all realms of human experience.

Acupuncture involves the insertion of tiny stainless steel needles through the skin surface to access and balance the body’s energies and fluids. After the needles are in place, they may be retained for twenty minutes up to an hour, and may be stimulated by the practitioner at varying intervals, to reinforce the energetic healing taking place. During this time, the patient rests fully, aided by endorphin, a sedating and restorative hormone that is naturally secreted in response to the needles being inserted. Pain and illness are greatly reduced from this interval of resting with the needles.

Acupuncture treatments are an oasis from the rush of our daily routine, permit deep relaxation, time to collect our thoughts, to go inside. From this inner realm of quiet reflection and rest we can reset, get back in synch with a healthier rhythm, ultimately to arrive at a more vital state of mind and body.
